Melissa and Dan chose an autumnal barn wedding in Connecticut to celebrate their union, and Melissa’s sense of drama and fashion did not disappoint (check out their moody evening engagement shoot here). While most brides request natural makeup for their wedding, Melissa went against the grain and requested glam, dramatic eyes and lips. Her gown had a fitted bodice and full, voluptuous skirts–it was SO fun to photograph. And the deep burgundy of the bridesmaids’ velvet dresses complemented the fall rural landscape perfectly.
Beyond the aesthetics, though, this wedding shone with heart. Rarely have I witnesses a couple who seems so naturally, genuinely happy. At once point during the getting ready portion of the day, Melissa was being bombarded with the thousand last-minute questions that tend to fall on a bride as she’s immobilized, getting her hair done. I could see her starting to get a little stressed. We took a moment to remind ourselves what we were doing and why–re-presencing ourselves to the wonderful man waiting a level below–and I could see the change immediately. Just thinking about Dan helped calm her down. Remembering the big Why of their wedding helped slow her heartbeat and reminded her of what really mattered.
They opted to do a first look (which I always recommend if couples are open to it), but they did it with their own flair. Instead of being alone, they wanted their tightknit group of friends and family to surround them in the barn as they saw each other for the first time. Those photos are some of my favorites of the day.
The ceremony was held outside the barn on the lawn with majestic old trees bearing witness.
Because we did family photos before the ceremony, we were able to take sufficient time afterwards to capture portraits of them on the beautiful autumnal grounds. The colors and haziness offered a gorgeous setting for their timeless glamour.
Following that, the reception was just good old raucous fun. Melissa entered and ordered everyone in their wedding party to drink before absolutely OWNING the dancefloor. These two are so much fun, and I think their photos reflect their kind, truly loving relationship–both to each other and with their amazing community. (Check out their friends’ Stacey and Nick’s wedding, which I was lucky enough to shoot, here.)
