Ah, Ciara and Tiffany. My heart trips when I look at these pictures.
I met Ciara through my LGBTQ photo pop-ups in Madison, Wisconsin. Having initially come to be photographed, Ciara came back to subsequent pop-ups as a volunteer, so I got to know her better through photographing other queer folks alongside her.
She is young. And beyond her years. She has that effortless cool that should be on TV. She’s kind, and engaged, and happens to be an amazing model. And she’s also a photographer herself, so we had many things to talk about.
She and her girlfriend Tiffany decided to do a couple’s shoot with me, and agreed to let me choose the location. I knew of a boardwalk outside of Madison that I had always wanted to shoot at, so we headed there with one of their friends as an assistant.
They were so generous in their session. So wide open and brave in front of the camera. They didn’t hold anything back; their love is young and bold and full of passion, but it also has a solidness, a weight, beneath it that I don’t often encounter.
We played, tried things, and had so much fun that afternoon. These photos are some of my favorites from that summer, and I’ll never forget taking them. Since then, Ciara has been a second shooter for me at Wisconsin weddings, and I continue to admire her talent–I can’t wait to see where life will take her and Tiffany next.
