Kaylee and Karissa: Intimate Massachusetts Engagement Session

I think much of what you need to know about Kaylee and Karissa is right there in that first photo.

I was SO excited for this couple’s intimate apartment session for two reasons. One, most of my sessions are outside (which I love), but this was something a little different for me. Plus, they had sent me photos of their Massachusetts apartment after our initial call, and I immediately knew it would be perfect for photos–lots of windows, light-colored walls, a rather Northern European minimalism that photography loves. And two, my conversation with them on the phone had been fun, funny, easy, and, as it usually does when it feels right, felt like a conversation among friends.

When I arrived at their apartment on the day of our shoot, we sat down in their adorable kitchen and Kaylee put a cup of coffee in front of me. I honestly felt like I was in a friend’s home. We chatted about what was important to them and they caught me up on their wedding plans, showing me photos of the (gorgeous) venue and telling me what was important to them for their big day as well as what mattered about the photos we were about to take. My favorite thing about these introductory moments is that I get to observe how a couple interacts with each other, taking in the subtle personality cues they give off just by communicating. It helps me understand a couple’s dynamic a bit, informs how I can best coach them to capture the essence of their relationship.

I could see that, while Kaylee and Karissa’s relationship was playful, fun, and silly, there was heft, heart, and no shortage of intelligence sitting across from me. When it came to discussing details or plans, Kaylee took the lead, clearly and concisely clarifying and outlining expectations. I love this quality in people. There’s nobody easier to work with than a woman who’s clear on what she wants. And Karissa, while having a quieter energy, was equally engaged, equally opinionated, and equally lovely to sit across from.

When we started our shoot and I began giving them ridiculous prompts to get us going, I realized that, in addition to being serious about their plans and expectations, these two were also SERIOUS about having FUN. They LOVED playing little games with each other, the sillier the better, and I could tell each of them got a kick out of making the other laugh. They were full of joy during the shoot, totally willing to go along with the experience, and open to even my weirdest suggestions and prompts. They were completely comfortable in each other’s presence and were such generous hosts and subjects. This was one of the most special shoots I’ve done in recent memory both because of the location and because of the two special people I got to work with. I CANNOT wait for your wedding, you two.
