Kerrie and Kevin were immediately open, heartfelt, and completely themselves on the phone with me. I think we probably talked for an hour the first time we spoke. They were so easy to talk to, and had such a beautiful story. Both have been married before and came into this relationship with children. They talked about melding their families in such a thoughtful, loving way that I could picture their household clearly just from their description.
They also describe themselves as total goofballs, always cracking each other up with references and private jokes that only the two of them think are funny. Laughter is one of the building blocks of their successful relationship; laughter and joy. They lean into the joy, which I so, so appreciate.
They suggested we do their engagement session at Yankee Candle Village in Massachusetts. That was where they had their first date, and it was where, one year later, Kevin proposed to the woman he knew was made for him. I obviously said yes—what place could have more significance for this couple?
I knew to expect their laughter, Kevin’s dad jokes, and their lighthearted silliness based on what they had told me. But this couple is way more than two self-proclaimed goofballs. They are a solid, strong unit raising a family together. They are two individuals who have learned the hard way what’s most important, and are fighting for it with smiles ever-present on their face. For them, joy is a choice. A choice they make, mindfully, each day. A choice they are instilling in their children. A choice that helps spread it to those who come into contact with them.
This session was special for me, because they let me into something sacred of their love. They showed themselves to me in a way that is rare and lovely. I’m so excited to be even a small part of their love story, and I can’t wait for their wedding next year. It will be a joyous celebration.
