This lesbian couple’s unapologetically feminine photos practically jump off the page with humor and mutual adoration. Emma and Crichelle were already married when we finally found time for their ‘engagement session’; the two had been busy wrapping up their graduate degrees at the Yale Divinity School, planning their wedding, and moving to a different state! They chose to have their couple’s session at the Yale Divinity School campus where they had met and fallen in love, and we got beautiful, early evening light for the occasion.
I love the bold, primary color dresses they each wore. The red and blue complemented each other perfectly and made for bold, colorful images. (I am always trying to get people to wear more color, and I think you can see why here!) I also really enjoyed how Emma and Crichelle both embrace their femininity in different ways. Queer couples show such a vibrant (and ever-changing) display of gender identity and presentation. This lesbian couple clearly takes great joy in their femininity, while each woman feels and wears it differently. Have I mentioned how much I love photographing LGBTQ+ couples!?
We spent most of our time on the relatively small but rich campus grounds, playing with light, shadow, and form among the arches and brickwork of the classical architecture. Emma and Crichelle’s playfulness combine with their mutual tenderness to showcase the unique fingerprint of their relationship. (And Emma’s shyness contrasts with Crichelle’s bold theatricality, which created yet another fun dynamic to play with as a photographer.) These unapologetically feminine photos are some of my favorites.
