Queer DIY Wedding with Renaissance Style
Naomh and Maria’s queer DIY wedding with Renaissance style brought their community together for games and contra dancing. They designed their own outfits in the Renaissance aesthetic they love, the colorful floral fabric of Maria’s skirt repeating in Naomh’s vest. Maria wore a flower crown, and her short sleeves showed off her beautiful fruit tattoo.
They festooned the Gore Place reception building with garland and flowers. Seating was displayed via beautiful bird-themed art. Their friend from Village Contra ran the dance floor expertly. I was amazed at how willing everyone was to join the Contra dance regardless of their experience level!
My favorite thing about this queer DIY wedding was how unapologetically queer it was. Maria and Naomh were not shy about any facet of their relationship or the things they love the most, and I saw the benevolence of this choice. Because everyone was invited in and they did not hide parts of themselves, people really showed up in full support. This is sadly not the norm, nor can queer folks typically expect this kind of wholehearted acceptance from everyone in their lives. Doubtless, Maria and Naomh have crafted their lives in a way that keeps their circle supportive and inclusive. But it did strike me, as I watched family members of multiple generations participate in this non-traditional wedding, how special it is to see this level of inclusion and honesty. It has stuck with me.
